STDs and HIV: A Striking Overlap

"A study of patients in Zimbabwe revealed a striking overlap between patients with HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Studying patients at high-volume STI clinics in Zimbabwe in 2014-15, Peter H. Kilmarx and colleagues found an extraordinarily high rate of HIV infection in STD patients, at 41%.

Compared to men, women had a higher incidence of HIV, and 60% of women with genital ulcer disease had the virus. There were also false positives: 14% of patients who said they were HIV positive were actually negative, pointing to a need for quality assurance in testing and stronger communication with patients about their status."
